Did you know there are scriptures to pray for peace? There is nothing like inner peace. In fact, peace provokes happiness from within. You can be happy and at peace within yourself. You don’t need people or material possessions to be happy. When you have inner peace and happiness, the “things” add to your happiness and peace. Within the last year, I’ve been on a personal journey to reclaim my peace and happiness amongst other things. Over the years, I felt like my peace and happiness was stolen from me. I’ve allowed many of the challenges I’ve faced to rob me of my peace. Certain things that occurred left me bitter, angry and full of resentment for years.
At the ending of 2017, I was talking to an elder at my church concerning a particular situation I had been praying about. He looked at me and said, “I want you to be happy. Commit everything into the hands of God and allow Him to lead you. He will lead you to the place, He desires for you. But just be happy.” I was a little taken back by what he said because I remember praying to God saying, Lord, I just want to be happy. In 2018, I just want to be happy. I’m not asking for material things or riches but above all else, I want to be happy in Christ. Now hear me out, there is a difference in earthly happiness which is temporary but to be happy in Christ. It’s eternal happiness, nothing or no one can take your happiness away because they did not give it to you. What the world did not give the world cannot take.
Some years back when I was thinking about going back to school, the Lord said to me it doesn’t matter what you accomplish in life. If you don’t have me, you have nothing. You’ll always be searching for the next best thing. I can give you all of the desires of your heart but if I’m not in the midst you’ll always be empty.” Three years later, I realized the Lord was right when He spoke to me then. I graduated in June 2017, I was happy but something was still missing. Here I was getting ready to receive my Masters, doing great in my career and bought my first car as a graduation present to myself. Yet something was still missing.
Friend, the things you desire is more than what you see in the natural. Yes, it’s great to be successful, have material possessions. I am by no means denying that and God does not withhold anything good from His children. But I also know what it feels like to accomplish goals and still feel empty. What I am saying to you is do not allow material possessions and success to be the foundation of your life. You can lose everything at any given moment. As believers, Jesus is the foundation. Some might say you can lose all with Christ as the foundation as well. Yes, true but God can restore it. Remember Job? He lost everything when the enemy attacked his family, riches and his health. But because God was at the foundation of Job’s life. Job received restoration. Happiness and peace cannot be bought. It is the condition of your heart. Peace is not found in what you have or in others.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21,
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Peace and happiness are found in Christ Jesus. It’s knowing and receiving the love of Christ in your heart. When you understand the love God has for you, nothing or no one can steal anything from you. People will come in and out of your life and whether they choose to stay or go, just knowing you have someone who is always with you in good times and bad times is enough to SHOUT for joy. And I’m not talking about just anybody, but the God who created the heaven and earth backing you in all your endeavors it’s enough to be happy and at peace within yourself. You have nothing to worry about because He promised to never leave you or forsake you. He promised to supply all your needs according to His riches and glory (Philippians 4:19). He promised to be there when you walk through deep waters (Isaiah 43:2). You will go through rivers of difficulty but you will not drown. Even if you walk through the fire of oppression it will not burn you. The flames of life will not consume you. God promised to be there so it doesn’t matter who walks out of your life. I know at times it’s hard to remember all these things but always remember Jesus is the way. No matter what the situation looks like look to Jesus and find rest in Him. Your inner peace comes from Him.
If you have allowed the challenges of life to rob you of your peace and happiness. I challenge you today to reclaim your peace. God promised you peace and happiness. As a child of God, you have a right to be happy. It is a part of your inheritance.
